Beware if you rent a car!

Hertz car rentals

Beware if you rent a car – especially from Hertz.  Over 300 individuals have been falsely arrested for felony theft of Hertz vehicles allegedly for not returning them, when in fact they did.  The problem lies in just leaving the keys, and not interacting with an agent on the car’s return, and especially not getting a receipt.  The return is then never logged in, and the car mysteriously disappears.  From my guesswork — and “inside” job, although it’s possible some crook has just staked out the location waiting for someone to drop off keys and walk away.  https://www.npr.org/2022/12/06/1140998674/hertz-false-accusation-stealing-cars-settlement#

I experienced a related case. I returned the car on the return date, interacted with the clerk at the desk, and everything was fine. Until one month later I received a bill for late payment and not returning the car on time. I stopped by their office again, spoke to someone new at the desk, who informed me I didn’t return the car according to their records. I produced a receipt, and showed them credit card records clearly proving I paid them on the correct date. It took upper management and about an hour of scratching their heads to update and correct the problem.
