I know! You’re asking yourself “what the heck” is an advertisement for a cowboy poetry book doing here??? Well, the answer is — the author of the book, “Marshal T. Justice”, is Mr. Gutmacher’s pseudonym as author of his western stories, all done as “narrative cowboy poetry”.
By “narrative poetry” I mean complete short stories but expressed in either a rhythmic or free verse format set out in a way that you mostly never even notice you’re reading something in verse. And, my stories are like nothing else out there in narrative, or cowboy poetry! They are smooth as glass, and often compared to “what if” the very famous Old West writers like Louis L’Amour or Zayne Grey wrote cowboy poems. If they did — this is sure as heck what it would look like!
Anyway, while my style could be called “Cowboy poetry”, it really isn’t. Sure, it fits the genre of Cowboy poems, but each of my western works are full stories not of the open prairie, or a cattle drive — but of tough and honorable individuals on the frontier, or more modern west, and their day-to-day battles to make it through life, or just make life better. Stories of hard men — brave but honest. Women, even stronger, and including three true stories of previously little or unknown minority members without whom the West could not have been won, along with twenty two archive photos of the Old West I personally picked out.
This is my first published book on western poems, “The Old West & Times Gone By” — and it is a book I believe is destined to become an American classic in modern narrative and cowboy poetry. It’s like nothing you’ve ever read or seen – a very quick read — and quite a few friends were really surprised how much they enjoyed it once they read it.
